Invest time in getting to know and understand your staff. My career has always been in people businesses. Go and look for yourself, don’t just read reports and analyse spreadsheets sat at your desk. Listen, watch and experience things so you have a true understanding. What advice would you give to someone starting in your career? My father talked endlessly about it afterwards and it was a proud moment for me to feel I’d been fortunate enough to share that experience with him. We were able to meet the pilot and walk round the Spitfire. The look on his face when he stepped out of the helicopter was so rewarding. Treating my elderly father to a trip to the other end of the country just so he could fly in a helicopter alongside a WW2 Spitfire. I aim to be a positive influence on those individuals, and that makes me feel great. It’s the feeling you get when you look back and realise how much someone has been able to develop that gives me real job satisfaction. Seeing people grow, blossom and achieve their goals is the greatest reward for me. I love having the opportunity to make a difference, and working with some great people with a desire to be the best at what they do.
